what may seem to be a failure usually leads to something good
At one of the first major national exhibitions that WIMED participated in early in the 1990s, I experienced two moments that were both important and educational for me: a success and a failure.
Success, because the exhibition of our products caught on and we were recognised as a company devoted to the production of road signs. Failure – when during an evening conversation, one of the first foreign visitors I had ever met suggested that I at least teach children foreign languages, as I didn’t know them myself. The fact that the statement was translated for me by a distinguished gentle- man, at the time very high in the hierarchy of road administration, was an unbelievable humiliation for me. It was a disaster that still lingers in my mind.
Today, from the perspective of time, I see how this profound humiliation transformed into a specific inspiration to learn English. An inspiration so powerful that I started to learn immediately. Soon, with full determination, I went to Oxford for a course for what at the time was a horrendous fee. There, it quickly turned out that I knew nothing, yet the maxim of Friedrich Nietzsche – that which does not kill us makes us stronger – became true in my case.
At Oxford, I got to know an exceptionally interesting man, Bruce Corrie, who not only helped me to master English, but also supported me in becoming a citizen of the world. Not as much physically as mentally.
